I have a long list of yodelers to share with you. I seldom find a yodeler I don’t like, no matter how good or bad - there’s something about a person just being willing to try that fills my heart with joy. Some are performing now (very few relatively speaking) and there are many from days gone by. You can find some compilation CD’s of the older yodelers on Amazon but the best way to track down older prime recordings (LP’s) is on eBay.  I’m always looking for more yodels and yodelers and sometimes a yodeler turns up missing or is very obscure. Let me if you come across any information relating to those I’ve listed or let me know of any I’ve missed.

The listings on eBay vary from month to month...sometimes there are lots and other times it’s slim pickens. When you search for yodels on ebay be sure to check out all of the options - “yodel”, “yodeler”, “yodeling”, “yodelling”, “jodler”, “jodel”, “jodeln” (you will also get yo-yo’s and model car pages with “yodel” and light aircraft with “jodel”, but that just makes it more fun). Also make sure you use the “Worldwide” option as many of the great Alpine yodel recordings come from Europre.  To make it easy,  go to my eBay yodel search page where I’ve set up the searches for you. Keep searching and check out my guide for yodel searching on eBay.  You’ll also find some of my reviews of yodel recordings on eBay and Amazon.

Here’s my list of yodelers (in no particular order)...

KERRY CHRISTENSEN - http://www.kerrychristensen.com/

A contemporary yodeler (one of the few who performs full-time in the US) who does both Alpine and Cowboy yodeling. He is absolutely amazing and he's got to be one of the fastest yodelers around. Kerry's recordings can be found at Amazon. I haven't seen many on eBay, but they show up once in a while!. All of Kerry’s recordings are terrific. I learned how to yodel using Kerry's U 2 Can Yodel cd.

FRANZL LANG - A german yodeler from the 50’s through the 80’s and without a doubt the guy who put alpine yodeling on the map...if it is on the map. From Bavaria, Lang's range and variations are astounding. He's retired now and his recordings are difficult to find. Most are on LP's and often show up on eBay and I have a large collection of his LP’s. You might try looking for a two CD set called “Der Königsjodler” (The Yodel King) on Amazon as well. All of Lang’s recordings are terrific.  Sound sample to the left  (click the photo) - “Mei Vata is a Alpenzeller”, a required song for every Alpine Yodeler.

RANDY ERWIN - http://www.cowboyrandy.com/index.html

Although I prefer alpine yodeling, I'm also a fan of cowboy yodeling. Randy Erwin (aka Randy Skalicki)  is, in my opinion, the best contemporary cowboy yodeler I have ever heard. Randy’s yodels are like honey covered bubbles. Sadly under- recorded and normally only performing in local venues these days, you really have to search to find his two releases (or the two combined into one called “Till the cows Come Home”). You’ll have to search eBay to find Randy’s CD’s. Highly recommended. Click the picture button for a sample of Randy’s smooth yodel.

WYLIE GUSTAFSON - http://wyliewebsite.com/

Wylie's yodeling is among the best you'll hear. His band is called Wylie and the Wild West and he has a cocky cowboy sound that’s great fun to listen to and his yodel is pure and clear.  Be sure to get his “Total Yodel” Cd.  The songs are mostly traditional cowboy yodel songs but also included are some that Wylie wrote himself. My favorite is Yodeling Fool. It's fast, funny and showcases Wylie's talent very well. Also look for his yodel instruction CD “How To Yodel”. It’s my number 2 recommended best yodel course.  You can easily find Wylie’s recordings on eBay! and Amazon or click the iTunes button under the photo.

TAYLOR WARE - http://www.taylorware.com/

The yodeling sensation from America’s Got Talent and the winner of the Yahoo! yodel challenge in 2003 at the age of 9. Taylor is a great yodeler, talented performer and just sparkles with life and personality.  Her debut CD is filled with yodeling and a couple of songs without yodels. Like most cowboy yodel songs the yodeling is somewhat similar between songs. Several songs stand out, most notably “Yodeling Cowgirls” and a cover of Carolina Cotton’s “Mockingbird Yodel”. I also particularly enjoyed “Chocolate Ice Cream Cone”. It’s a cue little song with just one simple yodel but that yodel is sweet.  Get Taylor’s CD on eBay or visit her website.
